Raw: Storage can be directly connected to the Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA). For VMware vSphere these are called Raw Device Mappings (RDMs); for Microsoft Hyper-V these are called Pass-through Disks. In both cases the hypervisor platform does not control the data flow.
VoV = Volume-on-Volume; The Virtual Storage Controller uses virtual disks provided by the hypervisor platform. For VMware vSphere these are Virtual Machine Disks (VMDKs); for Microsoft Hyper-V these are Virtual Hard Disks (VHDXs).
