DataCore was founded in 1998 and began to ship its first software-defined storage (SDS) platform, SANsymphony (SSY), in 1999. DataCore launched a separate entry-level storage virtualization solution, SANmelody (v1.4), in 2004. This platform was also the foundation for DataCores HCI solution, that was introduced with the release of SANmelody v2.0 in 2008 and enhanced with the release of SANmelody v3.0 in 2009. In 2011 SANmelody was reunited with SANsymphony v8.1. At the start of 2014, DataCore formally announced Virtual SAN as a separate product. One year later the name was extended to "Hyperconverged Virtual SAN". In may 2018 integral changes to the software licensing model enabled consolidation of all the separate DataCore platforms because the core software is the same and often cumulatively called DataCore SDS.

DataCore Software specializes in the high-tech fields of network storage virtualization and enterprise storage management. DataCore has by far the longest track-record when it comes to software-defined storage, when comparing to the other SDS/HCI vendors on the WhatMatrix.

In February 2020 the company had an install base of more than 10,000 customers worldwide and there were 250 employees working for DataCore.
