Details
StarWind Software is a privately held company which started in 2008 as a spin-off from Rocket Division Software, Ltd. (founded in 2003). It initially provided free Software Defined Storage (SDS) offerings to early adopters in 2009. Sometime in 2011 the company released its product Native SAN (later rebranded to Virtual SAN). In 2015 StarWind executed a successful "pivot shift" from software-only company to become a hardware vendor and brought Hyper-Convergence from the Enterprise level to SMB and ROBO. The new HyperConverged Appliance (HCA) allowed the company to tap into the "long tail" of the hyper-convergence market, thanks to its simplicity and cost-efficiency. In 2016 StarWind released two more hardware products: Backup Appliance and Storage Appliance.

In June 2019 the company had a StarWind HCA install base of approximately 1,250 customers worldwide. In June 2019 there were more than 250 employees working for StarWind.
