Introducing the Cloud Storage Gateway comparison

Suddenly I got the opportunity to join this interesting project and such offer can’t be refused. Cloud storage gateways work on a simple principle: They are physical or virtual devices – either on premise or in the cloud, which act as a “connector” between that local environment and the remote cloud environment. Maybe you could ask why I chose Cloud Storage gateway as the topic for my comparison. Indeed there may be other solutions more in today’s spotlight … . The most important reason simply was the fact that I have extensive experience with Cloud Storage gateways from my daily job. The second aspect was the incredible proliferation of these cloud technologies. Whatever forecast you read, all have the same outcome, the services around cloud will grow and storing the data in the cloud will be one of the main contributors.

The Cloud Storage Gateway (CSG) Market in US is expected to grow at a CAGR of 64.3 percent from 2015-2019, according to a new report from research firm TechNavio.

Obviously not every aspect is currently ‘perfectly’ supported (green fields in the matrix), there are some challenges which every Cloud Storage Gateway vendor has to deal with, the main ones are Data Security and Network latency. There are some techniques which help to mitigate a risk and I’m planning to write a Cloud Storage Gateway series which will focus and explain the solution in a deep manner. For the initial comparison there will be five vendors Panzura, Nasuni, Ctera, EMC and Microsoft.
